What Should You Be Doing To Maintain Your Tires?

Automotive Blog

One part of your vehicle that sees a significant amount of wear and tear are your tires. However, do you know what you should be doing to maintain them and help them last longer? Here are some tips that you should follow.

Check The Shocks And Struts

Part of maintaining your tires actually starts with your shocks and struts. That is because this part helps reduce the wear and tear from driving on a daily basis by absorbing the bumps in the road. If the shocks and struts are bad, the tires end up doing all of the work, which is not good for their longevity. What you want to do is go around your vehicle and actually push down on the vehicle above each tire. If the shock and struts are in good condition, the car is not going to be bouncing much because the parts are doing their job. If the car is shaking a lot after pressing down on it, you likely have a problem with the shock and struts and need them repaired or replaced.

Check The Suspension

Checking the suspension of the vehicle is another way to maintain your tires. However, the only way to check the suspension is to raise your vehicle off the ground with a jack. This will allow you to grab the tire on both sides and try to wiggle it. If the suspension is in good shape, that tire is not going to wiggle at all when you grab hold of it. If the tire is wobbling, then you know that there is a problem with your suspension.

Much like with the shock and struts, a bad suspension is going to cause your tire to do a lot more work to absorb bumps in the road. You'll find that tires on vehicles with bad suspensions end up taking on more wear quicker, which will require premature replacement

Check The Tire Pressure

Having the correct air pressure in your tires is important so that the tire doesn't wear out prematurely. How much air pressure should a tire have? This information is often printed on the tire itself with the maximum air pressure allowed or the information is in your vehicle owner's manual. Always make sure that the air pressure is within the suggested range. Put too much air in, and the tire will bulge out in the center and cause that area to wear out faster. Put in too little air, then the edges of the tire will stick out more and wear out along the edges.
